All the nuttallis are native to the NW and I don’t suggest them for any other area. They are very susceptible to anthracnose even in the NW but , as they are large trees, people don’t look at them too carefully, and at a distance they are pretty spectacular with their large white flowers, often with a fall bloom also, and good fall color. zone 6.

Variegated Cornelian Cherry is a shrubby tree to 12′, has masses of yellow flowers on blackish limbs in late winter, edible fruit (pretty sour actually so it is mostly used for jelly, etc.) and good fall color: a super tree all-told. zone 5

After bad-mouthing the fruit of Cornus mas for years, this year I decided to do a real test and taste it when it was ripe. Sunrise was the first to ripen and the sweetest and I was impressed. It is not a blueberry or a mulberry, but it is definitely edible.
