Monumentale (Acer saccharum 'Monumentale')

Sugar Maples are known for their hardiness and fall color, but how about this one for a great shape, esp if you are short on horizontal space and long on vertical. zone 4

Size: 1 gallon Price: $35.00
Size: Field grown Price: $130.00

Puget Pink (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Puget Pink')

Puget Pink is a semi-dwarf tree which is lovely in the spring with salmon colored leaves but pretty common looking thereafter.

Prinz Handjery (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Prinz Handjery')

Prinz Handjery (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Prinz Handjery')

Much smaller than the species, this cultivar will stay a shrub if desired–to 12′. Its charm is in the unfolding leaves which are salmon colored, fading to green in the summer with purple undersides. zone 4

Size: 1 gallon Price: $35.00

Eskimo Sunset (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Eskimo Sunset')

Eskimo Sunset has a very unusual and varied leaf coloration. The tree is smaller than species, 10′ in 10 years with a broad head. Zone 4.

Watnong (Acer palmatum 'Watnong')

Watnong (Acer palmatum 'Watnong')

Watnong is probably the same cultivar as Baldsmith, a wonderful new dissectum. This pitiful picture at least shows the variations in the foliage color that seem to be always present.

Waterfall (Acer palmatum 'Waterfall')

Waterfall (Acer palmatum 'Waterfall')

Like Viridis and Palmatifidum, this is a mounding-type shrub, growing much wider than tall with deeply dissected leaves. My specimen turns more red than the expected yellow in the fall. zone 6

Size: 1 gallon Price: $35.00

Tamukeyama (Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama')

Tamukeyama (Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama')

In my opinion, this is the best of the weeping red dissectums as it grows full and vigorously and keeps its dark maroon color all summer.

Spring Delight (Acer palmatum 'Spring Delight')

Spring Delight is a green dissectum which is much more delightful in fall than in spring when the green new leaves are tipped with red.

Seiryu (Acer palmatum 'Seiryu')

The only really good upright dissectum, the tree may reach 18′ and is a delicate lacy light green. Zone 5. This photo is from Michael Healy.

About Whitman Farms

Whitman Farms began in 1980 as an informal nut tree and small fruit adjunct to a large bareroot nursery next door in Salem Oregon. It was a one-woman show and mostly for fun. However, Lucile Whitman (pictured), the owner, got sidetracked; she became enamored of unusual ornamental trees and started planting any weird and wonderful woody plants she ran across, using root control bags, a new plant-friendly technology.
