Genie (Magnolia ‘Genie’

Posted on December 15, 2013 by Lucile Whitman

This is a winner: Genie Magnolia is PERFECT for the small garden: a dwarf tree, a long spring bloom with a flower so purple it comes out black, a repeat bloom in late summer (hence my pic), and fragrant.

Size: 1 gallon Price: $30.00

Although Kosar developed Galaxy over 50 years ago, it is still a favorite. The tree isn’t small but it is narrow and flowers heavily after most frost danger has past. zone 5

Magnolia ‘Daybreak’

Size: 1 gallon Price: $30.00
Size: Field grown Price: $115.00

Charles Raffill (Magnolia campbellii ‘Charles Rafill’)

Posted on December 13, 2013 by Lucile Whitman

magcharlesraffill
This is a huge tree as you would expect from a campbellii, but Raffill made the cross hoping for a later bloom on a more precocious tree, but it is still problematical in areas of late frost.

Size: 1 gallon Price: $30.00
Size: Field grown Price: $115.00

About Whitman Farms

Whitman Farms began in 1980 as an informal nut tree and small fruit adjunct to a large bareroot nursery next door in Salem Oregon. It was a one-woman show and mostly for fun. However, Lucile Whitman (pictured), the owner, got sidetracked; she became enamored of unusual ornamental trees and started planting any weird and wonderful woody plants she ran across, using root control bags, a new plant-friendly technology.
