Baldsmith (Acer palmatum 'Baldsmith')

In spite of its unprepossessing name, Baldsmith has become popular among the dissectums; it has the same cascading habit, but the leaf color changes throughout the season beginning with tones of pink and orange, adding green in the summer and turning many shades of orange and red in the fall. Unfortunately it is not wildly vigorous, but it is definitely worth waiting for it to grow. I have another cultivar ‘Watnong’ (also unfortunately named) which may be the same cultivar. zone 6. This photo by Michael Helay captures the variation in the color excellently; it is always changing.

This upright red cultivar is smaller and more delicate looking than Bloodgood, otherwise it is pretty similar in that it holds its crimson color well in summer and has good scarlet fall color. Zone 5.

Winter Flame (Acer palmatum ‘Winter Flame )

Sorry about the pic. It is truly the lazy man’s photo to put up a pic of a one gallon when there are beauties in the field, but if have seen Sango Kaku or Beni Kawa or any of the coral barks, then you can imagine this tree. Winter Flame is just a little shorter and a little bushier. And more resistant to pseudomonas? Those claims are out there. In my open windy location, pseudomonas is not a problem so I can’t test it. This one is my favorite.
