Mulberry (Morus alba) Girardi Dwarf Mulberry

This must be the mulberry bush that the children had a ring around as it only grows to 6′; otherwise it has delicious black berries. Please note: the name of this tree is Gerardi; I have been calling it Giraldi because I misread my writing on the original tag. I apologize. I will for sure take a pic this summer as this is a killer tree. The fruit ranks right up there with Noir of Spain–well, OK, maybe not there, but really really good.

Mulberry (Morus nigra) Noir of Spain Black Mulberry

This is the tree to which I take every visitor in late summer. The fruit bleeds wickedly down your hand as you pick, but the flavor makes you jump. Unfortunately, it can’t stand any zone less than 7 and probably not more than 9. It may just be a westcoast tree. We are soooo lucky.

Mulberry (Morus nigra) James II Black Mulberry

This is the very tree that James the Second had smuggled in to England thinking that he would be able to make silk, but lo! It turned out to be a Morus nigra and the silkworms wouldn’t touch it. The fruit is better though, but not hardy out of zone 7.
