Styrax japonica ‘Evening Light’

This new introduction from Plant Haven is stunning. The foliage is a shiny purple turning dark green in the shade and the bell flowers opening in June really stand out. There are some other new Styraxes coming out, but this is my favorite. And can you believe I have that stupid hose in the background? Zone 5.

  1. I haven’t been to the website in a while. I saw the recent posts, and thought I’d let you know that I have an ulmus ‘Wredei’ in my backyard that’s been in for about 5 years. It’s about 8 feet tall now (started from a 2g) and doing great! It sits behind a daphne x houtteana and a couple of rhody roxieanum varieties, with some assorted heuchera filling in.
I also have a Styrax ‘Evening Glow’, just a babe that I picked up at Farwest last year and put into a 2g pot. Doing well, but in a shady spot so not a lot of purple.
FYI, I used to buy your stuff when I was a buyer at Sky Nursery in Shoreline WA in the ’90’s, and at Wight’s Nursery in Lynnwood WA in the ‘oughts. Was at your place a couple of times in the mid ’90’s. Glad to see you’re still going strong!
